Text Conversions (Regional Languages)

Last updated

Customers often want the menu in their own language while your team works in English. Text Conversions keeps a translated name for every item, material, type and unit, and lets PDFs print the translation instead of (or alongside) the English text.

Supported languages: Bangla, Bihari, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu (and English).

Convert a category

  1. Application Setup → Text Conversions.
  2. Pick a category — All text strings, or one of Item names, Material names, Item types, Material Types, Event types, Order types, Sub-menu Types, Item Description, Units, Cookware, Serveware, Cutlery.
  3. Select Language.
  4. Click Convert. Machine translation runs in the background (an expected time is shown for large lists); translations appear in the Translated Text column as they complete.

Translation uses an online AI/translation service and is metered — convert categories as you need them rather than All text strings repeatedly. See Plans and Subscription → Metered items.

Fix a translation

Machine translation of dish names is imperfect (transliteration vs translation, regional spellings). Click the pencil on a row → Edit Text Conversion → change Translated Text → Save. Manual edits are kept; re-running Convert only fills rows that are still empty.

New items added later have no translation until you run Convert again for that category.

Print in the regional language

Application Setup → Preferences → Printing → Use Translated Text. When on, menus and item-quantity PDFs print the translated name wherever one exists (untranslated entries fall back to English). Choose a Font Name under Report Styles that supports the script if the PDF shows boxes instead of characters.

GenAI language preference (Preferences → Locale) is separate: it controls the language GenAI uses when generating new items, menus or materials.

Common questions

The PDF shows squares instead of letters. The selected font lacks the script. Change Font Name in Preferences → Reports Templates.

Only some items are translated on the print. Run Convert for Item names again to fill the new ones, or edit them manually.

Can I translate into two languages? One translated text per entry is stored — pick the language your customers need most.
